Chukwueze goals and Rangers stun help hosts cruise to Coppa Italia

Manager Paulo Fonseca praised AC Milan after two goals from Samuel Chukwueze helped eliminate Sassuolo 6-1 at the San Siro in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia.

Nigerian striker Chukwueze headed in from close range in the 12th minute and curled his second past goalkeeper Giacomo Satalino less than 10 minutes later after Tammy Abraham found him in the box on the right.

Dutch midfielder Tijani Reinders had the pick of the early goals between Chukwueze's efforts, tapping in a thunderous finish from outside the box.

Rafael Leao scored the fourth to put Milan firmly on course for a second home win in four days and a third in a row in all competitions, going into the interval 4-0 up.

Davide Calabria fired home Christian Pulisic's shot in the 56th minute, and after Samuele Mulatieri replied for the leaders in the second row, Abraham added the sixth from a tight angle.

Milan's players are ready

“It was a very good performance,” Fonseca told Sport Mediaset Football Italy. “The first half was great and it also helped me rest some players.

“I have only positive things to say because we took it very seriously. I am very satisfied with the attitude of the players. I have always said that I have faith in all my players and that is why they can all play.

“I'm happy today because some who didn't play that much this season made a great performance. They showed me that they are ready and that's what I want.”

AC Milan results: 'Real progress'

Milan began Fonseca's reign with one win in five games but are now unbeaten in seven and have suffered one defeat in their last 10.

“I told the players that the most important thing in these games is to avoid relaxation,” said the Portuguese. “It was crucial that we started strong with intensity, got the ball back quickly and pressed high, and they did it all.

“It used to be a problem because of the attitude towards the smaller teams, but today we showed real progress on that score. I can only be satisfied.

“I am responsible for everything that happens on this side and if we had a wrong attitude before, I will not try to run away from my responsibility for it.

Seventh-placed Milan, with a game in hand, has four points less than sixth-placed Juventus. The Rossoneri visit second-placed Atalanta on Friday (19:45 GMT).
