Cody Gakpo's second Premier League goal of the season opened the scoring as Liverpool dominated the early stages at home to reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday – with former Manchester United captain Gary Neville describing the Citizens as “absolutely beaten”.
Netherlands international Gakpo found himself at the far post from Mohamed Salah's pinpoint pass across goal as the almost unthinkable prospect of a fifth consecutive home defeat for City loomed large at Anfield.
“The blood is melting,” former England international Gary Neville told Sky Sports after Gakpo converted in the 12th minute in a game where the Reds had won just one of their previous nine league appearances.
“City look absolutely overmatched. That was incredible from Mo Salah.”

City got off to a poor start in the match between the two dominant powers in English football in seven years, initially almost falling behind when Virgil van Dijk sent a header against the woodwork.
Pep Guardiola dropped first-choice goalkeeper Ederson for Stefan Ortega, but it wasn't long before the German was beaten as part of the hosts' intense start.
Liverpool looked like a team that started eight points above City after a run of 14 wins and one draw in their last 15 games in all competitions.
Arsenal's 5-2 win away to West Ham on Saturday and Chelsea's 3-0 home win against Aston Villa earlier in the week left City two points behind Liverpool's two nearest rivals at the start, level with Brighton and Hove Albion.

“It's men against boys,” said Neville as City struggled to score a try. “This game should be out of sight.”
“City have no real way of getting in behind. They play around Liverpool – they are static.”
City are looking to become champions for a fifth successive season, with only Liverpool's 2019/20 side stopping them from winning the title in each of the last seven campaigns.
Rico Lewis went closest for City with an effort that went wide, although the restored Trent Alexander-Arnold grazed the post for Liverpool with a powerful low shot.
