Guardiola defends Manchester City's performance despite Juventus defeat

Pep Guardiola says he is pleased with how his Manchester City team played despite suffering yet another defeat.

The Premier League champions suffered a 2-0 defeat at Juventus, condemning them to a lowly 22nd place in the Champions League table.

City dominated most of the game in Turin but were hit on the counter for both goals.

However, Guardiola defended his players even though it was just one win in 10 for the Spaniard.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, he said: “We played well, really, really well.

“We're slacking off a bit, there's been a transition, but I'm very proud of these players.

“They give everything and they tried and now we live in this period and we hope we can change the results.

“I know it's difficult in the Champions League in Europe. We played really well. Today we did really well, we didn't lose many balls like in the past, we tried, we got into the positions.

“Against Italian teams, you defend so deep, so compact. Master of these situations. We are playing who we are and we missed the result, but the performance is there.

“We have two games, maybe we need a point.

“Go to Turin, Paris, our three away games were really tough. You have to accept it. We will look back, we will not forget that period, we will appreciate more what we have done in the past, what we will do in the future.”

It seems unlikely that City will now automatically qualify for the next round of the Champions League.

Instead, they will have to enter a play-off round for placing between 9 and 24.

If they win, they will earn a place in the round of 16 of the competition.

But as Guardiola mentioned, they will likely need at least one more point from their games against Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge.
