Guinness World Records has addressed the claims made by Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, who says he broke the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Chef Smith made this announcement during a press conference at Hotel La on July 2, 2024, presenting a certificate as evidence of his success.

Chef Smith went so far as to present a certificate to defend his claim of breaking the longest cooking marathon by an individual. Watch the video below

During the press conference announcing the alleged success, he declared.

Chef Ebenezer Smith

I am deeply humbled and honored to announce that I am now the new world record holder for the cook-a-thon, he said.

The inscription on his certificate reads: “The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 802 hours 25 minutes and was achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) at Spintex, Accra, Ghana. From February 1 to 6 of March 2024.

In an official response email from GHone TV, Guinness World Records denied the claim, confirming that the individual who holds the record for the longest cooking marathon is Alan Fisher of Ireland, who achieved a time of 119 hours , 57 minutes and 16 seconds in Matsue. Shimane, Japan from September 28 to October 3, 2023.

This investigation was made necessary by the doubts about the authenticity of the certificate of Chef Smith and the unavailability of places from the Guinness World Records, confirming his supposed feat.

A further update from TV3 Ghana regarding the Guinness World Records confirms that the information is false, as they reached Guinness World Records directly via X account.

GWR has verified to TV3 that Chef Smith does not hold a record for the longest cooking time.

Another update from Guinness World Records reveals that the marathon cooking record is no longer valid.

GWR has disabled a number of records for various reasons, such as the record of the fastest violinist which was removed in 2017 for challenges in judging the quality of the performances.

According to a report by Asase Fm, Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service and is currently being held at the La Police Station in Accra.

The details of his arrest are still unclear, but it comes shortly after Chef Smith announced his recognition by the Guinness World Records for achieving the record time in a cooking marathon.

According to additional sources, it was reported that Nana Boroo brought security personnel to the venue of the conference over an alleged contract dispute with Smith.
