Neuer sees red for the first time in his career in the DFB Cup

Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his storied career to reduce Bayern Munich to 10 men after 17 minutes of their DFB Cup clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

Germany legend Neuer was sacked after flying out of his penalty area and bringing down Jeremy Frimpong in the round of 16 at the Allianz Arena.

Neuer was seen apologizing to manager Vincent Kompany and striker Leroy Sane, who made way for substitute goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

The booking against Augsburg in January was Neuer's only booking last season and the latest of his 23 cautions since his senior club debut for Schalke in 2006.

The Bayern captain made his 19th appearance of the 2024/25 season after helping his side move four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The 38-year-old was on target for Bayern's 4-0 demolitions of SSV Ulm and Mainz in their first two DFB Cup games.

Bayern started brightly in the absence of Harry Kane with a hamstring injury, going close when Florian Wirtz shot wide.

Sane was dropped from the front line, too, with Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Michael Oliseh, and Neuer's departure didn't seem to unsettle Kompany's squad too much.

Konrad Leimer broke through and fired a shot against the side netting just before Perec saved a shot from Frimpong with his foot.

Leon Gorecka's header was saved by visiting goalkeeper Matej Kovar and Wirtz's effort was denied by Perec as the sides were level at the interval.

Who is Daniel Perec?

Israeli goalkeeper Peretz joined Bayern from Maccabi Tel Aviv for a reported fee of more than £4.1m in August 2023.

Now 24, he made his Bayern debut against Preussen Munster in the DFB Cup in September 2023, with his lone Bundesliga appearance so far coming against Wolfsburg in May.

Peretz enjoyed one of the best performances of his career on November 14, helping Israel to a 0-0 draw away to France in the Nations League.
