Skeleton Crew's Jude Law reveals what he learned from his young co-stars (Exclusive Interview)

Between “Skeleton Crew,” Spider-Man, and “Cop Car,” both seem obsessed with pranking kids. Is it a reflection of your own history as children being teased, or is this a bit of wish fulfillment because you were good guys? What's wrong with us?

Jon Watts: No, I think what it is, is what I always wanted to happen as a kid. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and please just go walk into a field in a straight line and just hope you get abducted by aliens, or find some buried pirate treasure or something like that, and then it never happens. We never found a police car, as we hoped. So yeah, all these movies, I think we're just trying to make that dream come true.

You interview a lot of people, and people talk about the movies that made them want to make movies and want to write movies. “Star Wars” and “Jaws” are the two that people mention the most, but “Skeleton Crew” will probably be an introduction to this world for an entire generation of people. Have you also processed that your project will foster that love of this world that will make others want to make films?

Christopher Ford: Wow.

Watts: I think when “Star Wars” really works, it doesn't matter how old you are, it makes you feel like 10 years old. So, by telling the story through the eyes of four 10-year-olds, we hope to capture that same feeling that “Star Wars” had for us when we first saw it.

Ford: And to what you're saying, I think it's really weird to be on this side of the “Star Wars” thing as a fan for so long. And as much as we love our characters and we've created this whole story, and we put so much work into it, I don't really feel like it's ours. It is for the fans and for everyone who appreciates “Star Wars”, and so for me, it seems totally natural that a new generation or other people have their own opinion and take things from what we have done and make something of else with her. . I'm much more interested in being a part of that continued use of “Star Wars” as opposed to us saying, “This is our story, the end.” I want to add to the communal thing.

Watts: It's nice to add a bit of a postscript to the giant myth.

Ford: So much of the movie is so collaborative, so it's not, “I think this is it,” it's like, everyone comes together and works together.
